Today, I was disappointed to find that this feature no longer has a prominent call-out on its home page, and is now buried on the \u201cFind a Restaurant\u201d page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Boo.<\/p>\n<p>Before I go too much further, let\u2019s get a definition on the table. In a word, location-aware technology is <em>not<\/em> IP address tracking. It\u2019s much more sophisticated and accurate than that. According to <a title=\"TechTarget\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TechTarget<\/a>, location-aware technology is \u201c\u2026 determined by one of three methods: by\u00a0GPS\u00a0satellite\u00a0tracking, by cellular tower\u00a0triangulation, or by the device&#8217;s media access control address on a Wi-Fi\u00a0network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s immediately obvious why location-aware technology is fundamental to most mobile browsing experiences, but I also like to encourage clients to think about it for their desktop sites, too.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see below, <a title=\"Foodspotting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodspotting.com\" target=\"_blank\">Foodspotting<\/a> automatically figured out which Minneapolis suburb I live in, and showed me photos of food from nearby restaurants. This is a smart application of the technology. I often conduct my restaurant research on my laptop <em>before<\/em> I leave the house \u2013 not while I\u2019m already driving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/foodspotting.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-843\" title=\"location aware technology\" src=\"http:\/\/juneux.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/locationaware_foodspotting.jpg\" alt=\"foodspotting website\" width=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juneux.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/locationaware_foodspotting.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/juneux.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/locationaware_foodspotting-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a multi-location retailer, restaurant or an international company, I think location-aware technology is a must-have for your website.
