{"id":5959,"date":"2018-12-22T16:57:56","date_gmt":"2018-12-22T22:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juneux.com\/blog\/?p=5959"},"modified":"2020-01-22T23:27:07","modified_gmt":"2020-01-23T05:27:07","slug":"how-to-persuade-your-leaders-to-invest-in-ux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juneux.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/how-to-persuade-your-leaders-to-invest-in-ux\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Persuade Your Leaders to Invest in UX"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">What can you do when your boss or your organization\u2019s leaders say \u201cno\u201d to design?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An ongoing challenge shared by many UX professionals is getting the green light to move forward on a solution to improve the user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believing UX is the right thing to do isn\u2019t enough. As UX strategists, we must categorically demonstrate the business value, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 7 ways to turn a \u201cno\u201d into a \u201cyes\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Run a Pilot<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many leaders are risk-averse or unable to justify huge sums of money on an idea that may not be a sure thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it possible to launch your concept as a pilot with a small group of users\u2014then scale up later?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Build an MVP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To overcome objectives to a high price tag or long production timeline, break apart the idea into its absolute core essence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the DNA of the idea? Keep zooming in until you find to the smallest possible version of the concept\u2014or minimum viable product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. A\/B Test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t guess, test. For low investment enhancements, there are few options that have <em>less<\/em> risk than A\/B testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Test the idea with a fraction of users, then compare how it performed against the control group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Calculate Opportunity Cost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What would happen if the product or enhancement didn\u2019t move forward? What is the ongoing cost to the company?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for ways to calculate hard costs, such as fielding customer service calls due to a poor user experience or developer time spent fixing a substandard feature that periodically breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also look for ways to calculate opportunity costs\u2014lost revenue due to a poor user experience. If only 40% of people complete the checkout process, that means 60% lost revenue. Multiply that by AOV (average order value).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Create a Fake Door<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Test your idea with real users without building anything at all. Use the fake door or wizard of oz method to validate demand or expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Fake door:<\/strong> Use a placebo form, link, or CTA to test how many people click or indicate their interest.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Wizard of oz:<\/strong> Manually create the desired experience for the user, instead of automatically by the product or website.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Conduct a Kano Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already, conduct Kano analysis with your users to determine where this concept fits along the desirability spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kano inherently prioritizes ideas based on ROI and shines a spotlight on features that should be <em>removed<\/em> from your product or site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Keep Socializing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you believe in your idea, don\u2019t give up! With time, attitudes can change. (Or leaders do.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Show how your idea fits into the company\u2019s overall business strategy. What is the core business problem this concept solves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take objectors out for coffee to better understand their prejudices and priorities.
