There was no knob to turn. No lever to push on. So how did you first learn to open this type of door?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You looked for clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<p>You saw the roller track, vertical latch thing-a-bob, or both, and then put it together in your head.<\/p>\n<p>Adjusting mini blinds to block the morning sun. Inserting a debit card into an ATM. There are hundreds of things we\u2019ve learned in life without reading a word of instruction.<\/p>\n<p>But you <em>were<\/em> taught.<\/p>\n<p>The designer showed you.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Signifier<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4>A Signifier is a visual cue that makes it clear what to do or how to use something.<\/h4>\n<p>Signifiers keep people from exclaiming, \u201cWell, how was I supposed to know it would do that?!\u201d and then angrily stomping away.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Common Examples of Web Signifiers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Buttons <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Buttons look like buttons generally because of 2 visuals cues: their rectangle shape and their drop shadow (or gradient). This why you rarely see web buttons in the shape of triangles, stars, or turtles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How do you know something is a link? Designers keep inventing new ways to signal that something is clickable, but which visual cues do <em>your users<\/em> recognize?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make it a different color (usually blue)<\/li>\n<li>Underline it<\/li>\n<li>Make it a different color upon hover<\/li>\n<li>Animate it<\/li>\n<li>Replace it with something else<\/li>\n<li>Nothing \/ make users\u00a0read your mind<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Links and buttons are pretty forgiving, but what about less common interactive elements, such as sliders, drag and drop objects, touch gestures, toggles, and scrollbars?
